Tamil Language Facts

Tamil is the official language of Southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu. It is also one of the recognized languages for official correspondence in four countries, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. There are about 70 million Tamil speakers worldwide. In both Canada and Myanmar, the Tamil speaking population is about one million.

A few scholars have linked the origins of Tamil to that of Sanskrit; however, unlike most of the other established literary languages of India, the origins of Tamil are independent of Sanskrit. Tamil has the longest unbroken literary tradition amongst the 4 major Dravidian languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam). Tamil occupies a distinctive position among the Dravidian languages owing to its geographical expansion, for it has spread beyond the frontiers of India. Tamil is the only language among the old languages that has a history of 2000 or more years of existence.

Apart from being the language of forty million people in Tamil Nadu it is the spoken and written language of several millions of Tamils living in Ceylon, Burma, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, Fiji Islands and Mauritius.

Spoken in: India, Sri Lanka and Singapore, where it has official status; with significant minorities in Canada, Malaysia, Mauritius, and RĂ©union, and emigrant communities around the world.
