Sinhalese Language Facts

Sinhalese, also known as Sinhala, is one of the official and national languages of Sri Lanka, along with Tamil, which is also has official status in the Tamil Nadu state. It is spoken by about 15 million people as native language, living mainly in the southern and western two-thirds of the island. It is also spoken as a second language by other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka, totalling about 3 million. An Indo-iluropean language descended from Sanskrit, Sinhalese was brought to Ceylon by settlers from northern India in the 5th century B.C.

The closest relative of Sinhalese is the language of the Maldives and Minicoy Island (India), Dhivehi.
