Croatian Language Facts

Croatian (hrvatski) is a South Slavic language spoken chiefly by Croats in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring countries, as well as the Croatian diaspora worldwide.

Croatian is written in the Gaj's Latin alphabet. There are three principal dialects: Shtokavian, Chakavian, and Kajkavian dialects. The literary and standard language is based on Western Shtokavian, which is also the basis of Standard Serbian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin. These are commonly subsumed under the term Serbo-Croatian in English, though this term carries negative historical connotations for many Croats.

Spoken in: Croatia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, United States
